Dresses are kind of a “one and done” for when you need to get dressed without stress. But how can you wear a dress in winter?
For my second winter practicing modesty I partially gave up on skirts. Mostly because I just couldn’t find skirts that were comfortable enough for the long haul. Dresses seemed like a comfortable option.
Either they impaired my walking or impaired my eating.
Neither of these things made me happy.
So I temporarily gave up on skirts and switched to dresses. The dresses I found were super affordable, comfortable on the worst of days, and even easier to layer up for warmth. There is also the priceless benefit of just looking cute.
The main goal of the outfits I put together is to give the impression, “Oh that’s a nicely put together outfit” rather than, “Oh she wears skirts and dresses all the time”.
Goals = Tasteful + Inconspicuous.
So how can we enjoy the comfort and class of a cute dress in winter and still be warm?
Winter Layers for Dresses
Long slip
These have helped so much, it cuts down on any static, provides a base layer close to the skin to hold in heat, and it solves the problem of the knit dresses tending to be too thin.
If you don’t have a long slip, just a camisole and a half-slip will work too.
Fleece-Leggings
So warm, so cozy. Comes in so MANY colors! You can also find them with feet to really seal in your body heat.
Boot Cuffs and Leg Warmers
I like these for when my boot can’t quite handle a thick soak without squishing my toes. Just pull them up over your legging and let them stick out of your boot by a few inches.
They don’t slide around. They add a fun accessorizing element depending on the color you choose.
Infinit Scarf or Cowl Neck Scarf
I buy these kinds of scarves almost exclusively. I don’t like to fuss with things like long thin scarves or blanket scarves.
If it’s an infinity scarf, you double the loops and place around your neck, if it’s a cowl neck it just slides over your head and takes a little fluffing.
Open Cardigans
These are super trendy right now and really are cozy, especially nice for fall. I have them in light neutrals like gray and oatmeal so they go with everything.
Pull-Over Sweater
A pullover sweater over my dress?
Yup. Try it.
To the casual observer, it appears you are wearing a skirt and a sweater! If your dress is solid colored, wear a cute print, if the dress is a print pick a complimenting solid.
Vest
I love vests. And there are so many to choose from! Denim for fall and spring, puffer vests for winter, plaids and plain colors, fir along the collar or lined with Sherpa! Take your pick!
So don’t be afraid to order a winter dress! There are so many ways to be warm and comfortable in a dress!
