Maybe you’ve never asked Google this question: How to stay warm in a skirt?
But I have!
Although I did find some answers, it took several winters of trial and error. The answer to how to stay warm in a skirt is all about different kinds of layers. I’m going to share with you my favorite layers for winter.
There have been occasions that involved outdoor activities when skeptical people have commented that I must be cold because I’m not wearing pants.
But this just isn’t the case; in fact, I would wager that I was actually cozier than they were!
If you think about it from the standpoint of body heat, having each of your legs separated from the other in pant legs, versus having them combine and hold in the heat within the confines of a comfy skirt…its actually a lot warmer.
You will have to experience it to know it’s true!
So here’s my tried and true tips for how to stay warm in a skirt!
Camisole
Wear under your sweater or long sleeve shirt. It’s close-fitting and keeps all the core heat in!
Fleece-lined Leggings
These are so soft. Size up for comfort. I have even worn them under the leggings of my athletic skirts for snow sports!
Over the Knee Socks
There are times you don’t really need a full-on legging under your skirt and these provide a perfect balance of airflow and warm feet. I will often use these with a below the knee skirt and a tall boot.
Long Coat
I have a love for coats and jackets! Having a long coat as opposed to one that is waist length makes such a difference in cold weather.
Boots
Flats and tennis shoes can be cute and casual, but if it’s cold you want coverage. I find it most comfortable and flattering to wear an ankle boot with a long skirt or midi length and a tall boot with a below the knee-length skirt.
If you can only afford one pair, get a nice cognac color! It looks great with black outfits and earth tones. Gone are the days when your purse and shoes have to match!
Experiment with different ways of layering. You really have to just try out different combinations until you hit on something that works for you and your climate!
I had at least 2 winters of wearing skirts that I was pretty unhappy most of the time. I either was cold or felt like my clothes were strangling me.
With persistence and prayer, I found my way and built a winter wardrobe that I now look forward to wearing.
It was also my experience last winter that the material of the skirt can make a huge difference. Click here for Warm Winter Skirt Ideas.
